My responses to Gabriel Byrne Quotes via Vikings

“The viking world is a very sophisticated society I mean what they wanted was to spread their kingdom their power their search for wealth-to expand.” – Gabriel Byrne

My Response: Yes the Vikings were indeed a very sophisticated society but as opposed to what? Us? No. Other people in the same time period? Yes-maybe. Yes they definitely wanted to expand there is no doubt about that fact that the Vikings wanted to expand. I don’t think that Vikings just spent their life as farmers either.

“They had a very sophisticated sense of religion and nature with very  definite laws about the afterlife  and the role of the Gods but I think that societies begin to change  and perhpaps fall apart when people begin to question the nature of that and I’ve decided that my character is a man who has doubts about the gods and believes in temporal power.” – Gabriel Byrne

My Response: Yes Vikings had a sophisticated sense of religion and nature. They also did have very definite laws about the afterlife and the role of the gods but so many other cultures have had too. Yes-back then if people started to question the nature of that then yes, societies would have changed. How would societies have fallen apart though? Nowadays of course, society doesn’t change or fall apart if people question those things-but then why does society nowadays not fall apart or change if people question those things now?

I think it is brilliant by the way Gabriel that you added some of your ‘own life’ into the mix making it so that Earl Haraldson has douts about the gods and that he believes in temporal power. I think it’s great Gabriel you decided to do that because in doing so, I think you made Earl Haraldson my new favourite hero in that he makes it that much more alright/okay etc to question one’s own beliefs in a set religion or otherwise.  As well Gabriel I get how this makes Earl Haraldson that much more relatable to real life and also, you once said to “Listen-to really listen.” So really listening–I know Gabriel that you refer to yourself as a “Daylight Atheist” when everything is fine you don’t believe but then–you do….you have never given up truly being a Catholic and you should be praised for that Gabriel–there is nothing wrong with ‘hating’ the Catholic church for it’s actions on a daily basis.  If I went by your definititon of being a Daylight Atheist Gabriel–than I definitely fit you and your description.

“He’s a man of power who’s time as a powerful man may be drawing to a close.” – Gabriel Byrne

My Response: Well if Earl Haraldson ends up dying–hmm I will only stick with this show as long as Earl Haraldson is in it. Nah! I would stick with the show just to see what happens after Earl Haraldson dies(if he ends up dying.)

    In response to you posting.
You have made some good observations, But The one about society changing. Society is evolving all the time. But when you have the materialistic on the other end of the teeter totter and the religious on the other things change. Only a few will still believe in an unseen power that controls their lives. But even then materialism will intrude. Case in point the Church. Opulent to the excess. This of course was done to show the common man that they had all the power.
We either grow and change or stagnate. I believe that is what Mr. Byrne is trying to say, especially about his own beliefs. I am Catholic but have become very delusioned with her. She gives me nothing. The word has be corrupted by a group of fat old men who have their own agendas. The men that control the Church have done so for the power, and power corrupts. So I would completely agree with Mr Byrne.
In this day and age of information at lighting speed we must question everything otherwise we become sheep to the slaughter. It’s still okay to have faith but question why you have it. Do you have faith because your parents have it or does it fill a need inside you. I think sometimes I’ve lived too long and seen too much to make me believe in the Church anymore, but I will never tell anyone that they are wrong in their believing. And if I’m wrong I welcome the debate on why I’m wrong. As for there being a God /Gods/Goddess Yes they are with us and Yes I do believe, just not in the Church or any “religion”.
    Thanks for listening.

    • Thanks for replying! :) I was trying to open it to discussion. As for what Gabriel believes-I’m on that boat with him. Only because…I’ve gone to Catholic school almost all my life-I was an altar server for a few years. I wanted to be a nun-heh thankfully my mom said no-knowing I couldn’t go there XD…I’d have problems being told what to believe. I think it winds up I turn to religion when it’s dark…when I need help or if I start questioning too much-because I constantly question the church and yes the church is greedy…holy rollers are in general to the point it’s sickening and they do need to learn to bud out of telling people what to believe i.e. abortion/marriage….just because church says X I’m not following. Nor does my mom-does it make us any less Catholic—well for strict Catholics like on Fisheaters.com they say “All Catholics are Christians but not all Christians are Catholic” pile of fluff if you ask me >.<…of course they labeled me a troll, heretic and ooh yes they banned me :/..>…TROLOLOLOLOL….They have issues -.-…and the whole rape&abortion thing :/…I’d bring that up and they’re like well the bible says blah blah blah….and I’m all like but GOD wouldn’t want a baby to come into this world to be mistreated/abandoned and they’re like but the bible says X….finally I just about had several long rants on it PTFO at all of them>>>still am! :/…

I lost my faith in the Church a long time ago. But for some reason I still believe in the Blessed Mother. I can’t see why they can’t see the failings of the Church as a whole. I think that if we weren’t sheep any more the Church would have to change.Women should be allowed to be priest and priest should be allowed to marry. And any one, ANY ONE that commits a grievous act should be tried And the Church should pay. But I’ve learned that you can never change anyone’s mind when they are lead blindly by the nose. So I stay away from discussions about religion because they are unwilling to listen. It’s just like a tea partier or a rich person they don’t want to hear it.

I’m sure we will have many more talks like this. And I will enjoy it.

        Love ya baby.
